harsh realities faced by children and their families. Yet, amid these challenging circumstances, WCS stands as

We want to highlight four children of different ages to illustrate the challenges that our students face. Many of the students are older than typical for their grade level because they were not able to start school at the appropriate time or they had a deficient education. The lunch that we provide for the students is sometimes their only/best meal of the day.
Three of our teachers interviewed these families and submitted the following reports.
MERCY MASHILI
Mercy Mashili is a grade 2 pupil aged 9 years old. She lives with her mother at her grandmother’s place in the Mwenye compound, about 400 meters away from Wisdom Christian School. Both parents are alive but separated. The family faces difficulties in meeting essential basic needs and providing school requirements* for the child. Despite these factors, the child is often present for lessons.

CHIPANGO PRINCE
Chipango Prince is a
grade 4 pupil aged 13 years old. He is a
single orphan and lives with his mother and four siblings in Twapia Overspill, about 700 meters away from the school. The single mother hardly meets the essential basic needs, subjecting the family to having a meal payday or skipped meals. Meeting the child’s school requirements* is a struggle, and he is thankful to Wisdom Christian School for the continued provision of free education.
KUNDA GEOFFREY
Kunda Geoffrey is a
grade 6 pupil aged 15 years old and
lives with his grandmother in Mwenye compound a few meters away from the school. He’s a single orphan, and
his mother abandoned him and his elder brother when their father died. The grandmother hardly meets the basic needs nor the school necessities.*
Musonda Betsheba is a
grade 9 pupil aged 16 years and lives with her mother and stepfather in the Chichele area, about 800 meters from the school. Her mother provides everything for her but hardly meets all the school necessities.* Betsheba is
one of the brilliant girls and is passionate about her dreams despite the pressing conditions.
* Even though the school is free to attend, the students/families are purchasing their exercise books (where they write their lessons), pencils, etc. They also contribute towards the cost of the uniforms. LIVING WELL is now committed to take on more of the expenses for these students.
